About Scholarly Sources

This is an overview of the sections of many (not all!) scholarly sources. Take a look to help you engage with your sources, especially for the first time!

Please keep in mind that this is an oversimplification and not all scholarly sources will be laid our this way or labeled this way.

 The Abstract is a short summary of the work & research. It provides a high-level overview of the entire paper.

The Introduction situates the research within big-picture conversations and introduces the hypothesis and/or thesis of this work.

 

decorative imageThe Literature Review is a review of other research and sources on this topic. It summarizes and analyzes relevant scholarship.

The Methods Section/ Methodology describes how the research was conducted and the decisions the researchers made. It should include strengths & weaknesses.

The Discussion is a description of the results and what they might mean.

The Bibliography is a list of references for sources that the researchers consulted.
