Graduate Research Day: Communicating your Research: Accessible & Appealing Data Visualizations

Top Tips for Data Visualizations:

What are the most important things to keep in mind when creating a data visualization?

  • Consider your data type when picking what type of visualization to use.
  • Remember that your chart should be easy to read and understand at a passing glance.
    • Don't overload a single visualization with too much information.
    • Use a title and labels and make them large enough to read from a distance.
    • Use as little jargon as possible and define terms when possible.
  • Consider and center accessibility
    • Good color choices (make it color-blind friendly)
    • Good font choices (large and Sans-Serif typefaces)
    • Use alternative text for people who use screen readers
  • Avoid misleading elements
    • Keep scaling consistent
    • Start axes at 0
    • You know correlation doesn't equal causation- can you help your viewer understand or remember that?
