  • Born 15 September 1852 in New Haven, CT (dies 1918)
  • 1868 joins the prestigious Hopkins Grammar School; 1870 graduates as valedictorian
  • 1870 Enters Yale College where he studies Physics and Mathematics
  • 1874 graduates and immediately continues graduate studies in physics
  • 1876 graduates with a Ph.D. in physics writing his dissertation on Measuring Refractive Indices
  • Teaches at for 26 years in Philadelphia at the Institute for Colored Youth
