Census for 1820
A table presenting aggregate returns for the United States by States and Territories is followed by tables for individual districts (States and Territories) with data showing:
number of free whites, slaves, and free colored persons by sex and age, as well as
number of foreigners not naturalized,
number of persons engaged in agriculture,
number of persons engaged in commerce,
number of persons engaged in manufactures,
all other persons except Indians not taxed and
total amount in each county, parish, township, town, or city.
These tables are preceded by a letter of transmittal which explains some of the delayed returns, a copy of the circular addressed to the marshals of each district outlining the scope of the census, and the forms and schedules to be used in the enumeration of the population and manufactures.
