Getting Started

Researching history means working across many kinds of sources—scholarly articles, books, primary documents, newspapers, and more. This guide brings those resources together in one place. You’ll find tools to help you search for journal articles, discover digitized archives, explore full-text databases, and track down books, images, and newspapers from around the world and across centuries. Think of it as both a starting point and a companion as your research develops.

The sections are organized by the kinds of materials they include. Best Bets highlights a few core databases that are useful for most topics. Indexes, Abstracts, and Bibliographies help you identify what’s been published on a subject, even when the full text isn’t online. Databases link you to collections of full-text articles. Books and Ebooks will point you toward both print and digital volumes. Archives and Primary Sources includes collections of historical documents, letters, images, and other firsthand materials. Finally, Newspapers and Magazines offers access to both contemporary and historical periodicals. Use the tabs above to explore by region or time period—or just start browsing.
